James Lainchbury (Irish, Scots, Ngati Awa) is a Te Whanganui a Tara / Wellington based intercultural artist whose work treads a narrow path between low brow, pop culture and high brow, fine arts.

Steeped in dense monochromatic swathes of ink reminiscent of 1980's pulpy sci fi comics (notably 2000AD) and contemporary Mecha manga and anime, all the while riffing on customary traditions of Maori whakairo (carving) and the overtly sexualised Dolls of Hans Bellmer. Lainchbury produces quasi mystic visions, past and future atua (gods) from the beyond.
